head north

Are you there winter?   No?  Ok, that’s cool.

The mild winter has been fun, but I know my kid has been pissed.   He’s a kid, of course he wants tons of snow!    This grass in February stuff isn’t cool.   To give him something of a little winter experience his dad and I brought him up to Saranac Lake this weekend.   It’s the Adirondacks, they must be slammed with snow?   Nope.   But it was still pretty cool.

Manfriend’s brother helps construct the ice castle for The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival so we got to get a little preview of the awesomeness:

Really amazing stuff.   I believe the Winter Carnival kicks off this weekend and runs through next.   Weather permitting the ice castle should be open for the next 30 days.   The theme this year is space invasion and there are a lot of amazing space craft ice creations…2 1/2 hours away from Albany…definitely worth the drive.

After we checked out the castle we wandered into Lake Placid for a bit..walked out onto the lake, enjoyed the day.   Then manfriend’s bro took us to a relatively secluded frozen lake, it was pretty breathtaking at dusk (sorry for the choppiness, it’s a crappy panorama app on my iPhone):

Not a ton of snow in the Adirondacks right now, but still beautiful to see.   That’s what I love about living in Albany.   Jump in the car, drive about 2 1/2 hours south and you’re in the city.   Drive about 2 1/2 hours north, you’re deep in the Adirondacks.   NYS may annoy the crap out of me sometimes, but it’s got range.

it’s 5

5 degrees out as I type this:

That’s what I call snot freezing cold.   Classy way to describe the weather, but entirely true.  Instead of being able to run out with a light jacket on I’ve got to do the bundle:

I’m not a big fan of the bundle.   I had to say bye to my fingerless gloves for real gloves and remembered that I can’t really use my iPhone when gloves are on.   Not a huge deal, I’m cool with not checking emails when I’m outside, but this product caught my eye:

SmarTouch gloves!   The little pads on the fingers still let you get your swipe on.   Genius!   I’m sure they’ve been around forever but when I saw these yesterday it made my day.   If winter is for real about staying in the Capital Region, I may splurge on a pair of these.

Despite the chilly temps I’ll still make a smoothie to go this morning.   I’m going to try my own creation and hope it doesn’t suck too badly.

1 cup chocolate soy milk

2 handfuls of spinach

1 tablespoon of almond butter

1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed

maybe half a banana if it needs firming up and of course some ice cubes.

I’m in the mood for something chocolatey so we’ll see if this hits the spot.   Stay warm!

best boots ever

After today’s weather I can safely say this has been the weirdest winter ever.   Lightning?  In February?  While sleet is falling on top of snow?   The saving grace for me this crappy winter has been my Sorel boots.   This is my 4th winter with them and it’s like i just picked them up from the store yesterday.

After I moved back to the Capital Region from Florida I searched high and low for a pair of boots to ease me back in to the nasty winters and manfriend found my amazing Sorels.   While I looooove shoes, a winter boot expert I am not, but these feety protectors have gotten me through 4 winters of snow, heavy ice, torrential rain and even a few muddy experiences.   I even get compliments on how they look with a pair of jeans.  I’m never sad to put them away when winter draws to a close, and I hope I get to put them away soon, but i’m always happy to pull these babies out when I know the first snow is coming!!  If you’re in the market for new boots I’d definitely have to recommend Sorels!

Do you have a great pair of boots you love to get you through rough winters or a brand you’d recommend ?

way better than a picture of your dashboard thermometer
